Self-care is steps that someone takes to maintain or improve their well-being and health. This is important for both physical and mental health. Self-care is very person centered what will work for someone may not work for someone else, because of this please do not put pressure on yourself is something inst working for you. There are 8 areas of self-care.
1- Social Self-Care
Social self-care is about having access to a supportive group or network of relationships around you; in which you can turn to in a time of need. This is important as it helps you feel a sense of belonging. Feeling connected to people is very important in improving your mental health, talking to people about your feelings can give you a release, also it could help you get a different perspective. If you can try talking to family and friends even if its a phone call or text. If you feel like you can't talk to family or friends try and go to social events where other people would attend that have similar interests such as an art or book club.
2- Emotional Self-care
Emotional self-care is about enhancing you emotions both negative and positive, managing stress and developing compassion for both yourself and others. Its important to express your emotions in a healthy way, as this can lead you to feel worse. You can do this by talking to others about how you fee as scary as it is, it can help a huge amount. Other ways you can do this is by writing a feeling journal, a gratitude jar and turning your emotions into art. Always remember that your feelings are valid!
3- Psychological Self-care
Psychological self-care involves learning new things, practicing mindfulness and enhancing creativity. You can do this by reading books, decluttering your living space, spending more time in nature and finding hobbies you enjoy.
4- Spiritual Self-care
Spiritual Self-care involves the values and beliefs that are important to you and help guide your life. This includes your goals and the ways which help you support you developing your spiritual awareness. This can include meditation, keeping a diary or journal and talking walks.
5- Financial Self-care
Financial self-care is about being responsible for your finances and have a stable relationship with money. Examples of this are, knowing when your income is coming in to your account and knowing how much and when your bills are due. Knowing this and having your finances organised can help decrease stress.
6- Environmental Self-care
Environmental self-care is having a clean living environment; making sure its organised and clutter free. This can be achieved by cleaning up after a meal, recycling and putting things away once you've finished with them. Having a clean environment can help you feel calmer and less stressed.
7- Professional self-care
Professional self-care involves expressing your gifts and strengths. This can e from cooking an amazing meal to being good at dancing. Don't be afraid to show off these gifts!
8- Physical Self-care
Physical self-care is movement of the body, sleep, rest, health, nutrition, sexual needs and psychical touch. You can practice physical self-care by going for a long walk, getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods and looking after your personal hygiene.
